Citing
Vote Files

Every record on VoteFiles links the official source that proves it. When you cite VoteFiles, cite that official source too, so readers can check it themselves.

How to cite

Permanent citation pages

Each citable record has a permanent address at https://votefiles.com/cite/<id>. The ID is built only from the record's official identifier, so it does not change. Add ?format=json to get the same record as a data file for programmers. A citation page shows only details from the official record, the official source link, and the date you accessed it.

Citation kinds
  • A bill or resolution: bill-<congress>-<type><number> · for example bill-119-hr1
  • A roll-call vote: vote-<congress>-<h|s><roll> · for example vote-119-h9
  • An executive order: eo-<number> · for example eo-14416
  • A verified election deadline · for example deadline-pa-online-registration-general-2026
Suggested attribution

Source: Vote Files (votefiles.com/cite/<id>), citing [official source name and link]. Accessed [date].

If no publishable official record exists for an ID, the page says: “No official record has been found at this time. We are watching for updates.”
