House seats by state, 1790 to 2020

After every census, the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are shared out again among the states. This page holds the seats each state had after every census from 1790 to 2020.

Every figure is the U.S. Census Bureau's. Seats are held for the whole period; resident population and people per seat only from 1910, because the Bureau's tables for earlier years give seats alone. A state that did not yet have seats, and the District of Columbia, which has no voting seat, show no figure. Nothing here is estimated.

Michigan in the House of Representatives

Michigan first appears in the table for the 1830 census with 1 seat (it joined the Union in 1837) and is listed with 13 for the 2020 census. The most it has been listed with is 19, for the 1960 and 1970 censuses.

Before the first census the table counts the 13 original states only; a state that joined later has no figure until it has seats. A break in a line means no figure was published or held for that year. It does not mean zero.

The Bureau gives no population per seat before 1910 in these tables, so the lines start then.

Change is the seats in that census minus the seats in the column before; "New" marks the first column in which the state has seats. "Not in the tables" means the Bureau's tables for 1790 to 1900 give no population. Table 3 counts, in a census column, seats given to a state admitted after the census (Arizona and New Mexico in 1910, Alaska and Hawaii in 1950).
